Frequently Asked Questions
What is legal translation?
Legal translation is, briefly, the translation of legal documents.
What are legal documents?
Legal documents include but are not limited to the following:
Contract, Shareholders’ Agreements, Powers of Attorney, Company Registration Documents, Laws and Regulations, Due Diligence Reports, Financial Documents, Activity Reports, Tender Specifications, Minutes of Meeting, Petitions, Court Decrees, Arbitral Awards, Expert Opinions, Legal Opinions, Certificates, Diplomas, Patent and Trademark Filings and all other documents necessitating certification and notarization.
What are the obligations of legal translators?
The quality of the translation is even more significant in case of legal translations. Legal translation cannot tolerate even the slightest mistake. Therefore, legal translators are obliged to convey the exact message in the source text without causing any ambiguities in the target text. Legal translators usually work with strict delivery dates, yet they have to deliver true translations, which are, of course, free from any errors.
Why is legal translation difficult?
As enumerated hereinabove, legal translation includes the translation of laws and regulations and any inaccuracies in and incompleteness of the translated legislation may lead to the obstruction of justice. Furthermore, the slightest translation error in contractual provisions may be costly and may result in further disputes between the parties (if, of course, the text in one language in multiple-language contracts is not designated to prevail in case of any such disputes).
Thus, translation of legal documents requires not only the knowledge of the legal terminology but also an understanding of the legal systems throughout the world. Accordingly, expertise in the legal sector ensures accurate legal translations.
